First, an admission: I like Marilyn Manson. Schlock-shock rock has always appealed to me and the scarier a band can make it, the better. Give me a break, I was born on Halloween. The thing is, none of the acts are very original. So when Manson opens his mouth to bitch about My Chemical Romance stealing his act on the day his new album is released, I get a bit annoyed.
No, that's not quite right. It pisses me off, is what it does. Hypocrisy, something MM has long advocated against, always seems worse when the two-face is someone who should know better.
MM, as much as I like what he and his band has done, didn't come up with their look and theatrics out of a vacuum. He has Alice Cooper, KISS, Ozzy Osbourne, King Diamond, and even Iggy Pop and David Bowie to thank for his persona and its inherent stage creations. Rob Zombie beat Manson to the punch on this one, too. Zombie does it better, also, realizing that it is an act and using that to his advantage.
To be fair, I hate My Chemical Romance, so it does feel weird to be defending them. When the battle of the "I'm only popular because of Hot Topic" bands happens, Cradle of Filth and Dimmu Borgir will waste them all. And then, hopefully, kill each other.
