At last night's In the Round at Fremont Arts Abbey, I was privy to an incredible show that included a rotating showcase of musicians, live painting and a poet (I know what you're thinking, but it was incredible: a vegan dinner, chairs! A crowd that was respectful and genuinely interested. Not one person standing with their arms crossed cynically, waiting to be impressed). And now, thanks to Damien Jurado, one of the night's featured performers, I'm privy to a little something called the Lip Gloss song.
He's such a fan of Brooklyn born Lil Mama's first hit single (from her debut album Voice of the Young People-due out in September ) that he bought it at Silver Platters, has it as his cell phone ringtone and can't say enough about it. For good reason: the minimal backbeat and handclaps paired with Lil Mama's flow about her lip gloss, her key to being a part of the cool crowd has all of the addictive qualities that Kelis' Milkshake song grabbed hold with a couple years back.
Only this one comes with a message fit for Mr. Rogers. Watch, and learn.
