This news has me 1,000 kinds of excited. June 5th sees the release of A Purge of Dissidents on Ipecac -- it's a multimedia project from acclaimed graffiti and pop artist Dalek (a.k.a. James Marshall) and ex-Halo of Flies frontman Tom Hazelmeyer. The 10 animation pieces the duo created, based on Dalek's fine art work, should be pretty cool, but the soundtrack promises to be incredible: Hazelmeyer got the Melvins, former Husker Du drummer Grant Hart, and some others to create 30 instrumentals, and then enlisted such folks as David Yow (The Jesus Lizard), Craig Finn (The Hold Steady), Jon Spencer, and Hart to provide vocals for some of those tracks. It's being described as "solidly experimental" but "still connected to a spine of rock 'n roll," with a sound that "draws more from the Pere Ubu/Chrome/post-punk end of the spectrum than the standard 4/4 rock world."
A Purge of Dissidents will come out as a DVD/CD/30-page book package, and I for one can't wait to get my paws on it!
