He's not giving up his pop-punk ways, but MxPx's Mike Herrera is trying his hand at country with a solo project called Tumbledown.

Herrera's in his Bremerton studio working on a record. He's been playing some acoustic dates, too, primarily at The Manette, one of the town's few venues for live music.

The sets, including one Thursday night, have seen Herrera playing songs he's written for Tumbledown, covers (lots of Elvis Costello) as well as MxPx tunes. Playing solo with only the aid of the acoustic guitar, Herrera's had a hard time breaking the punk typecast, but if his backing band is allowed any breathing room, the record should have plenty of hearty twang.

He's enlisted the Rocky Point All-Stars, also a Bremerton product, to support him in the studio. The All-Stars have a Herrera-produced record in the works, and their demo has made its way onto Don Slack's "Swingin' Doors" show on KEXP a few times.
