Name That Beat

I was tooling around in my totally chic Flexcar sedan this morning, alternating between KUBE (Shareefa's "Need a Boss" is my new jam) and KEXP when John In The Morning hit me with Eric B. & Rakim's "Paid in Full."

Now I'm just wondering if anyone can tell me what to call this beat? Ishkur's Guide to Electronic Music educated me long ago on the distinctions between the Amen and Funky Drummer breaks, which have become the beds of about a million songs since they were adapted from their '60s funk/soul originals. Then of course there's the Apache. But I want to know the origin of this one. It's always slower, with a rolling beat and two high-hat pauses.

Other places variations on this break are found: PM Dawn's "Set Adrift on Memory Bliss," Souls of Mischief's "'93 'til Infinity," Massive Attack's "Unfinished Sympathy," Soul II Soul's "Back to Life," and plenty more. At the moment I can't find some samples to link to but if you know this groove like the back of your hand, please let me know what's up...
