  • Arts News Roundup

There's more to life than politics (no matter how fabulous those inaugural balls and concerts in Washington, DC). In our local arts news, the Seattle Office of Arts & Cultural Affairs announced today eight new members for its Seattle Arts Commission. The mayor appointed four: SAM curator Sandra D. Jackson-Dumont, architect Debra Guenther, Cornish trustee Carol Munro, CD Forum founder Stephanie Ellis-Smith, and musician David Sabee. (Sitting member Joaquin Herranz, a UW professor, was reappoi

  • Neko Case Is Also Skipping Seattle On Her Next Tour

Neko Case at Bumbershoot 2008. Photo by Renee McMahonI have to admit, this is something like poetic justic for me: After being flippant about Death Cab for Cutie not playing a show in Seattle as part of their next tour the other day, I just found out that Neko Case's tour in support of her upcoming record, Middle Cyclone, not only skips Seattle, but the entire West Coast. On the other hand, this could mean that she's playing Sasquatch, which is what I'm hoping for.  But still: what the hell

  • Sen. Murray on the Stimulus Package

The U.S. Senate passed its version of the stimulus package as pushed by the Obama Administration. It was no surprise that both of Washington's Democratic Senators voted in favor of the $838 billion measure. The House version of the bill is $19 billion less and the difference between the two will be hammered out in Conference committee. Sen. Patty Murray released the standard media press release today, lauding the legislation while outlining the juiciest bits of bacon being brought back to this

  • Should Revamped KeyArena Be Part of Federal Stimulus Package?

It's not as far-fetched as you might think, writes Henry Abbott: "The [Sacramento] Kings are reportedly losing a lot of money. And they are trying again to find a plan to finance a new arena that will help them be profitable. Meanwhile, in Washington D.C. politicians are talking about 'shovel ready' construction projects that would boost economic activity. Brace yourselves, sports fans and taxpayers: I'm just about certain that in one city or another, we're headed for a debate about whether or n

  • CBS, Tom Coburn, Dow Constantine Wag Fingers at Our Stimulus Spending

South Park BridgeThere's been no shortage of consternation over how we've spent our stimulus dollars. Seattle is all sorts of unhappy about none of the state-funneled money going to Seattle. And now, reports CBS News, Oklahoma Senator/all-around idiot Tom Coburn--the guy who once said, "That agenda [i.e. the "gay agenda] is the greatest threat to our freedom that we face today"--isn't happy about the NE 36th st. bridge over 520 in Redmond.

  • Strongman of the North

Alaska Sen. Ted Stevens is, by his own account, a 'mean, miserable SOB.' He's also a powerful SOB who has effectively become Washington's third senator. He wants to drill in ANWR and see more tankers cruising Puget Sound, but his overreaching may be a godsend for Maria Cantwell in 2006.

  • If Al Franken Can Be a U.S. Senator, How 'Bout J.P. Patches?

The NYT and everyone else is reporting the Minnesota Supreme Court decision finally granting former SNL funnyman Al Franken the critical 60th seat for Democrats in the U.S. Senate. There, he'll join our state delegation of Maria Cantwell and Patty Murray, neither of whom is particularly witty or quotable. But look: If a formerly dope-smoking, Harvard Lampoon-writing, Stuart Smalley-playing comic can get elected to our nation's highest legislative body, that opens the door for any number of loca

  • ZZ Top Cancels Seattle, But Soldiers on Elsewhere

As I feared, ZZ Top has officially had to cancel their Seattle date. Industrious fellows that they are, however, they've rescheduled dates down the rest of the west coast and back to the east, dubbing the impromptu itinerary revisions the "Necessity is a Mother Tour." Sadly, it was just too damn late to make something work here. I was hoping for a secret show at the Tractor, but no dice. If I had the funds, I'd fly to L.A. next weekend for sure: Rescheduled ZZ Top Dates: 18 Redding, CA

  • We're No. 36! Washington Narrowly Beats DC in National Happiness Ranking

What's the matter, Washington? Still bummed about the election results?Of course you are familiar with the Oswalt/Wu index of life satisfaction. The two scientists have published a paper in Science magazine (see abstract), based on data from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention and UCLA research, that surprisingly places Louisiana first among our 50 states--plus the District of Columbia--and New York last. Is this because hurricanes make people happy (or the excess drinking and

  • Oregon Is Stealing Washington's People

According to the odds, this woman is most likely headed from Detroit to D.C.Every year, the moving company United releases its "migration" study showing who's packing up and where they're heading. (Warning: PDF) As you might expect, this year the Great Lakes, what with their dying industries and all, are the big losers; nearly two-thirds of United's Michigan customers left state limits in 2009. The big winner is Washington, D.C., with over 67 percent of its moves being inbound. (Now that
