Lombardi’s Happy Hour Is for Lovers and Gluttons Alike

Lombardi’s happy hours accommodate social extremes: The menu’s low prices and lavish portions invite festivity, while the pocket-sized bar area’s ruddy walls and orange-gold lighting (an oasis in the center of the bustling multilevel restaurant) make it a cozy date spot. I brought three friends, and we ordered more food than could fit on our table; two yards away, a couple was canoodling in the corner booth, oblivious to our gluttony. More than just snacks to soak up booze, Lombardi’s happy hour plates are bona fide meals: a sizable helping of spaghetti and meatballs or six large triangles of garlic bread lush with melted Gorgonzola and asiago for $3. Five bucks gets you, among other things, a 12-inch pepperoni-and-sausage pizza or the bruschetta sampler: 12 rounds of toast with four ice-cream scoops of topping. The $3 drink menu includes microbrews, well drinks, and house wine; the “Italian mojito,” which includes a tangy float of limoncello, is $5. And the scheduling of the happy hours is just as generous as the bargains: They offer about 35 of them a week, from 3 to 6 and 9 to close every day, except late-night Sunday.
