A few new closures to note:Just to catch up on some late news, last week the dailies both reported that Seattle's Consolidated Restaurants chain just closedis closing Union Street Square Grill, which will be reopening as a Mexican-American restaurant called the Lost Lady American Cantina. The Rainier Valley Post reports that Salima, a halal Vietnamese-Malaysian restaurant on MLK, has closed. It opened during the worst of the Sound Transit construction and just never took off. Owner Asari Mohamoth

  • Date Night: Breakfast and a Stroll

There's something about a morning date that just seems so promising. It's a new day, the air is fresh, and you're both still waking up, so defenses are down. Plus, spending time together some morning could relieve possible awkwardnesses down the line (when that first overnight stay happens, you'll already know how they take their coffee).

  • Weren't We Supposed to Build Something Here?

Remember how last year everyone was excited about all the new developments going up around the light rail stations in Southeast Seattle? Then this year, in the legislature, there were all those fights over whether to require a minimum zoning density around the stations, the ones where the Displacement Coalition's John Fox accused Futurewise of trying to turn MLK into downtown San Francisco? It all seems so quaint now, as the Seattle Times is reporting that pretty much all the developments plann

  • Public Jackassery at Pike Pub

We bartenders have our dreaded days of work, full moons and home football games among them, especially when the Raiders are in town; but some days the crazies line up unpredictably. Yesterday was a two-fer of flashing lights at the Pike Pub. Incident number one involved an attempted overimbiber/crazy lady. Incident number two, the incident of note: While horsing around (as one witness put it) and sliding down a railing that leads down into the pub, some dumbass jumped off, allegedly, (fell off?

  • Seattle's Restaurant Reviews of the Week

The restaurant reviews that have appeared in print and online this week: Providence Cicero, at the Times, loves Taverna del Alabardero in Belltown, while my old boss Lynn Jacobson declares her entire family fond of the noodles at Pho Hoa in Columbia City. Bethany J Clement, Esq., of the Stranger says Smith is finally getting it right. Gastrognome decides she loves Ethan Stowell at Anchovies & Olives. Sumi Hahn has mixed feelings about Mulleady's in Magnolia. Surly Gourmand enjoys Knee Hig

  • Tried and True for Cinco de Mayo

What better way to celebrate the waning panic of the Mexican swine flu than with a fictional Mexican boozing holiday. If your idea is the standard Ameri-Mexi experience, try El Sombrero Restaurant in Columbia City (4868 Rainier Ave. S.), where the margaritas come strong and in giant glass goblets. Neighborhood favoriteEl Gallito near Madison Valley (1700 20th Ave., off Madison) gets points for authenticity and warm tortilla chips. I can vouch for the pint-sized margaritas at El Chupacabra in P

  • Breakin' Records: We're Breakin' 'Em!

Seely may not be impressed, but most of us are. Last night was the highest low temperature on record, says Cliff Mass--a balmy 71 degrees. Even if other regions are accustomed to such temps "on the reg," as Kenny Powers might put it, they also have a lot more air conditioning than we do. Today could top 100, making it the hottest Seattle day ever. People are so fired up that they crashed Probcast's server. (Probcast is the weather forecasting service provided by UW meteorologists.) • Light Rail's Urban Tourists Discover South Seattle Is, Um, in Seattle

As middle-class whites fall in love with light rail, some are traveling the line to discover foreign lands. Witness a couple strapping Caucasian men who emerged at the Columbia City station the other day wheeling bikes and looking around as if they were college backpackers just landed in Timbuktu. They asked directions to the Columbia City Cinema, and after getting it, responded to a question about where they were from. "Seattle," they said. As if this wasn't. Pressed for where exactly i

  • Restaurant Openings: Plum, Full Tilt, and Another Plate of Pastrami

Queen Anne is the, uh, hot neighborhood of the week, with two new restaurants opening in the near future. KwaTay, a Ghanaian restaurant, is set to open August 8 on First Avenue. And from the owner of Peso's, Toulouse Petit Kitchen & Lounge will have a menu inspired by the New Orleans' French Quarter. As of now, opening is set for Labor Day. Meanwhile, White Center's Full Tilt Ice Cream opened its second store on the main strip of Columbia City, reports the Rainier Valley Post. Eat ice cream, dr

  • Hold That Train! (And, While You're At It, Fix that Machine)

I had my first experience with running for a light rail train today. I got across the street from the Columbia City station just as the train was pulling up, waited a pause to let the train headed in the opposite direction leave, then made a break for it, grabbing my Ocra card out of my purse. I waved the scanner with my card as I ran past and just missed the mark. So I doubled back and scanned it more carefully. That's when I got the message that the machine was faulty. I had two choices

  • Columbia City Bakery Starts Selling Yes on R-71 Cookies

The Columbia City Bakery has just announced that, starting this Saturday and lasting up until the election, it will be selling heart-shaped shortbread cookies to raise money for Washington Families Standing Together. WAFST is working to get voters to approve Referendum 71, which will preserve the state's new expanded domestic-partnership rights (if you haven't heard, the referendum has just been certified and will be on this year's ballot). The cookies will cost $1.50, of which $1 will go to W

This coming Wednesday, October 14, for its fourth anniversary, every dollar you spend all day long at Columbia City Bakery will go to the Rainier Valley Food Bank.
