Chilean Flamingos

Interesting factoid: Flamingos are pink because they eat shrimp—which contain red pigment. They eat so much damn shrimp that they even piss pink, according to Mark Myers, Woodland Park Zoo’s flamingo expert (yep, there is such a thing). What better way to add color to monochrome Seattle than to import some shrimp-guzzling, pink-pissing feathered friends? Welcome the Chilean flamingos! All day long today, visitors can enjoy flamingo-themed giveaways (not those tacky lawn ornaments, we hope), South American music, and pink cupcakes. And in case you’re wondering why they stand on one leg . . . turns out, nobody knows. Woodland Park Zoo, 5500 Phinney Ave. N., 548-2500, www.zoo.org. $10–$15. 9:30 a.m.–4 p.m. ERIKA HOBART
