Politicians: If They Aren't Citizens, They Can't Vote For You
Posted Oct. 29, 2007 at 2:08 pm by Laura Onstot
Getting into this country in the first place gets most of the federal spotlight so little attention has been focused on the process of becoming a citizen once you finally get here. But the American Civil Liberties Union says it's taking too long.
They filed suit in Seattle Federal District Court today, backing four plaintiffs - from Iran, China and Somalia - who say they have been living legally in this country for seven or more years, have completed their citizenship exams, but are on a seemingly unending waiting list for getting their citizenship approved.
The ACLU and other immigrant groups say federal law requires action within 120 days of completing the exam. But the plaintiffs claim they have been waiting years despite clearing previous background checks.

Better Harvest
Posted July 13, 2007 at 3:48 pm by Mike SeelyTwo weeks ago, the Weekly ran a cover story by Sarah Stuteville and Alex Stonehill which explored the tangled politics and policies of the United States' foreign guest worker program. The story was grounded in the fields of the Yakima Valley, and mentioned separate class action lawsuits filed by both Thai guest workers and domestic workers over mistreatment and discriminatory hiring practices perpetuated by recruiter Global Horizons and a handful of Central Washington employers.
While the suit brought forth by the Thais is still pending, the domestic workers have been awarded $1.9 million in damages against Global, Valley Fruit Orcards, and Green Acre Farms, in a verdict handed down yesterday by U.S. District Judge Alan A. McDonald, who found the defendants liable for federal labor law violations.
