On Tuesday we reported on the major graffiti spree that resulted in more than $8,000 worth of damage at Gasworks Park. At the time, police indicated that up to 40-50 youths were likely involved in the vandalism.
Today, at least one youth has been taken into custody for the crime.
Here’s the official account from SPD:
A man arrested today in connection with a massive vandalism spree at Gasworks Park told police he began spray painting walls in the park early Monday after his 19th birthday party “got out of hand.”
After vandals caused more than $8,000 of damage at Gasworks this week, SPD Graffiti Detective Chris Young received a tip that a large group spotted fleeing from the park early Monday morning had gathered there to celebrate the 19-year-old man’s birthday.
Det. Young contacted the man at his home near Gasworks today and took him into custody.
The man, who has a history of vandalism, admitted he had tagged walls at Gasworks and will now be booked into the King County Jail for Investigation of Malicious Mischief.
Detectives continue to work to identify other suspects in the case. If you have any information which could help identify other suspects, email YoungC@Seattle.gov or call 206-684-5534.
