Gone missing

moonpenny.jpg

Gone missing: Moonpenny Opera. With plastic octopuses strapped to the contrabass, band members sporting full clown makeup and blue dreadlocks and a musical style that can only be described as circus polka, these guys are definitely one-of-a-kind. If you’re not quite convinced, consider these lyrics: “Oh I’ll show you sights you’ve never seen, take you where you’ve never been, pluck out your eyes and eat your spleen, I’m very pleased to eat-cha.” The trio used to be a staple at open mic nights in the U-District and busking in SODO streets and around Pike Place Market – but have now apparently vanished.. A disabled website and deserted Myspace profile beg the question – where are they?

Lil Mama, Big Hit

At last night's In the Round at Fremont Arts Abbey, I was privy to an incredible show that included a rotating showcase of musicians, live painting and a poet (I know what you're thinking, but it was incredible: a vegan dinner, chairs! A crowd that was respectful and genuinely interested. Not one person standing with their arms crossed cynically, waiting to be impressed). And now, thanks to Damien Jurado, one of the night's featured performers, I'm privy to a little something called the Lip Gloss song.

He's such a fan of Brooklyn born Lil Mama's first hit single (from her debut album Voice of the Young People-due out in September ) that he bought it at Silver Platters, has it as his cell phone ringtone and can't say enough about it. For good reason: the minimal backbeat and handclaps paired with Lil Mama's flow about her lip gloss, her key to being a part of the cool crowd has all of the addictive qualities that Kelis' Milkshake song grabbed hold with a couple years back.

Only this one comes with a message fit for Mr. Rogers. Watch, and learn.

Other Music

When it comes to local music, one shouldn't have to, erm, look very far. So it surprised me to discover Portland's Eux Autres via global indie-pop purveyor Keeping C86 Alive. That said, completely smitten with Heather and Nicholas Larimer's Francophile garage rock, heard on 2004's Janet Weiss-recorded Hell is Eux Autres, and the free download "Another Christmas at Home," one of two available on their site. Je t'aime.

Trucker's Lullaby World Premiere

Local filmmaker Jason Reid just sent me a link to the trailer for my brother Tim's new music video for the song Trucker's Lullaby. I'm biased, of course, but I can't remember a more enjoyable 20 seconds in my life. It's so very David Lynch. Check it. Reid is the genius behind the phenomenal documentary The Reid-Seacrest Olympics, which chronicles an athletic competition between two very unathletic schoolboy rivals/friends (and was deemed by the Boston Globe to be "the Citizen Kane of alcoholic clown movies"). My brother is the genius behind the seminal hit single, "Vaginal Yeast Infection," which he penned in junior high, I think. He's since moved on to less crass spats of lyricism. Oh yeah: the world premiere of the full Trucker's Lullaby video will occur during Tim's December 29 show at the Tractor Tavern.

Welcome to Reverb

re·verb (r-vĂ»rb) n.
1. A reverberative effect produced in recorded music by electronic means.
2. A device used for producing this effect.
This dictionary.com entry left out the HBO music show of the same name that aired in the late 90s, and that it's utilized heavily by our own Neko Case and Band of Horses. But oh well. Reverb is also the name of Seattle Weekly's new music blog (the foodie's have their own blog, why can't we?) Here, you'll find show reviews, gossip, plugged events we don't have room for in print, live photos, and whatever else strikes us as blog-worthy. We, of course, invite you to join us in the discussion by commenting. Have fun, ya'll!
