Rumors That Can't Possibly Be True...

...are still sometimes terribly amusing. Johnny Depp buying the Croc? Doubtful, yet intriguing.

Is Biopic Casting Ever Not Controversial?

I think not.

Hell, when I first heard that Reese Witherspoon was going to play June Carter Cash, I almost broke a plate. Similar reactions will probably be generated by the rumors that this actress:

May be playing this iconic singer:

I'd say Kidman's extraordinary height is an obvious issue (as one commentator on this NY Magazine post points out), but maybe she can pull it off. In the end, Witherspoon proved me wrong, so it'd be a nice surprise if this one managed to work out as well.

A Grohl/Novoselic Presidential Ticket?

grohlnovoselic.jpg

In the current issue of Harp, in which Foo Fighters frontman Dave Grohl announces his candidacy for president, the magazine asked the man who he thought would make a good running mate. Not surprisingly, Grohl mentioned the name of Nirvana bandmate and SW blogger Krist Novoselic. The bassist endorsed Grohl on The Daily Weekly, and readers have responded with calls for Novoselic in the VP spot.

From Harp:

HARP: Have you thought about who might make up a Grohl adminstration?

It’s a little early, but a few people to mind.

Krist Novoselic really excels in the political arena. When I need to a shoulder a cry on, when I need real advice all I have to do is call Krist and he reminds me what it is to be that kid with big dreams from Springfield, Va. The kid who worked at a furniture warehouse, mowed the lawn, and didn’t have enough money to be a member of the neighborhood swimming pool.

Chris Cornell and Susan Silver, during presumably happier times.

This should be taken with a grain of salt, considering the source, but TMZ is reporting some very ugly news about Chris Cornell's apparently contentious relationship with ex-wife and former manager Susan Silver. Sounds like things may have gone from bad to much, much worse.

Yep, Of Course People Want to Buy the Crocodile

Shh.jpg

A local club owner (who understandably needs to remain anonymous at this time) is already looking at picking up the Croc's month-to-month lease. The fact of the matter is that the building's rent is surprisingly inexpensive, the landlord is a good guy who supports the idea of a club continuing in that space (put those unfounded condo fears aside, seriously), and it's not unthinkable that someone could step in and snag the space. My fingers are crossed, but confidential to you, my good man: please give it serious thought.

UPDATE: Damn, now it's a collective of club owners (and no, I'm not talking about Steven Severin or Jason Lajeunesse). We may get a killer Christmas present yet—stay tuned to Reverb.... I'm feeling cautiously optimistic, and we'll let you know if and when anything firm goes down.

Re: Showbox Rumors

Showbox.jpg
Showbox: Not going anywhere, for awhile.

In case there was a question about the Showbox shutting down, here's what longtime talent buyer at the venue, Chad Queirolo had to say on the matter this morning:

Hi Everyone,

It used to be once a year an especially virulent rumor that the Showbox lease would end in March. This has been happening for at least ten years now! Unfortunately, the rumor now circulates on about a 90 day basis. It usually starts with a blog and like the game "telephone" mutates until it eventually becomes an undeniable fact. We then field one or two hundred phone call from bands , band management, agents, radio, print, television , industry mags etc. all asking why we are closing the following day? Its tremendously disruptive for any small business to go through this not once but a dozen times in a decade.

Please take note. The Showbox building has not been sold. We have a new five year lease on top of our current lease at The Market location as well as a 15 year lease at the Sodo location. We hope this answers everyone's questions until someone after five drinks in any hipster bar winks and whispers,"hey, have you heard about the Showbox?" whereupon we will drop everything and address the rumor...again.

The Cave Singers at Bumbershoot 2007. Photo by Chris Kornelis.

From the Nov. 23 issue of Entertainment Weekly:

"This trio makes something deliciously weird out of off-kilter folk rhythms."

Apparently more will be posted on the mag's Web site shortly.

Confirmed: Ian MacKaye Not Dead

Apparently, a MySpace bulletin (naturally) was posted about Fugazi member/Dischord Records co-founder/DIY God Ian MacKaye dying on Monday night. Don't believe what you're "friends" might have said and spread. MacKaye is still very much alive and well.

From the Baltimore Sun:

Ian MacKaye’s Death Proven False

A phone rings at 6:08 p.m. in Arlington, Va. A 45-year-old man picks up. The caller doesn't even have the chance to offer a greeting.

"I am still alive," reports Ian MacKaye, the frontman of such punk acts as Minor Threat and Fugazi, and the founder of Washington's Dischord Records. This would not be news except that The Sun and apparently many other organizations had been told that MacKaye was, in fact, dead. We were told that he died Monday night at Baltimore's St. Agnes Hospital. A call to the hospital found no evidence of such a patient. We followed up with calls to Dischord (left a message) and to MacKaye's home.

"I am happy to report that I am not dead," says MacKaye. He and the record company had been blasted with calls, he says, after premature reports of his death were posted on MySpace and Wikipedia. He says he hasn't been able to find the MySpace reference, but had the Wikipedia posting removed — and then re-removed, once someone reinserted the false news.

Billy Joe Shaver Rocks Redmond Cubicle

This afternoon at 3 p.m., country legend Billy Joe Shaver played a short, impromptu set...in a cubicle at the Redmond offices of Play Network, a Muzak-like company which pipes music into office and public environments. Says a witness of Shaver's performance, "We had him perform under fluorescent lights at the receptionist station (which was strange), his hands trembled, his guitar was out of tune and the stories he told of his three-time-wife’s recent passing and his son’s overdose were so excruciatingly personal I thought for sure some people would excuse themselves. That being said, it’s about as moved as I’ve ever been watching a guy sing with a guitar."

Such bizarre shows by high-profile national artists are, evidently, not all that unusual for the likes of Play Network and its Capitol Hill rival, DMX. Says our ear-witness of his time at DMX (he, like many Play Network employees, has worked for both outfits): "At DMX, Train, the Presidents, Collective Soul were the shitty ones, but the best was when the lesser known up-and-coming singer/songwriters checked in."
