I've Heard the New My Morning Jacket Record. And ...
Posted May 8 at 1:09 pm by Hannah Levin
I've spent the first part of my day listening to a highly guarded stream of Evil Urges, the new My Morning Jacket record, and I think it's a safe bet this is going to be their fan base-dividing record. Frontman Jim James has recently stated that he's hoping for a Radiohead-style trajectory for MMJ, and while it's no Kid A, it's a strange one. Prince seems to be a prevalent influence (ain't no shame in that, to be sure), along with semi-psychedelic '60s pop. Their signature reverb saturation is still present, but it's noticeably reigned in.
I like it and the fact that they are so steadfastly committed to creative growth, but it's gonna take some further digestion and adjustment to the fact that it doesn't have the instant appeal that Z and It Still Moves did. Still, there are few big guitar American rock bands that can rival them, and by all accounts, their live shows just keep getting better and better. Their publicist announced tour dates today, and they are scheduled for McCaw Hall (in the Seattle Center) for September 28.
And speaking of big guitars, I can't for the life of me figure out how I missed this announcement, but Judas Priest are heading here this summer...July 22 at WaMu Theater, to be precise. Fears of older metal bands sucking live are highly justifiable, but in the case of Rob Halford and company, go ahead and bet the farm. His range is entirely intact and KK Downing and Glen Tipton have no trouble keeping up. The only drag? This isn't part of the quadruple bill of beauty that other cities are getting: Motorhead, Heaven and Hell (Dio-era Black Sabbath), Testament and Judas Priest. No fair!
And now, for your afternoon amusement, I present Rob Halford, singing in court during one of the most tragic and stupid "metal-is-satanic" moments ever:

Steel Pole Bathtub Reuniting
Posted April 30 at 12:28 pm by Hannah LevinI mentioned this in my column today, but it's worth repeating again here on Reverb: Steel Pole Bathtub is reuniting! I tend to think of them as progressive noise punks ahead of their time, so this definitely feels more like justified revisionist history than nostalgic circle jerk (though it could be argued that whenever the phrase "progressive noise punk" is tossed about that a circle jerk is just around the bend).
Anyway, no word yet on whether this is just a one-off, but they are supposed to be playing the Willamette Weekly-sponsored Musicfest Northwest on Thursday, September 4 (Black Elk opens).
On a vaguely related note, while unsuccessfully trolling for a decent image of the band to use for this post, I came across this very cool site that traces the history of Tacoma's Community World Theater via old show posters:

Sharon Jones At The Zoo
Posted April 28 at 11:56 am by Brian J Barr
In case you missed Sharon Jones and the Dap-Kings last time they played Seattle (or, if you were just uncomfortable because the club was so packed and the show started so too late), here's your second chance! For those of you in that latter cateogory, breathe a sigh of relief...she's at the f'n Zoo. You can spread your blanket out, park the baby stroller, and not have to worry about bumping into any other groovers!
She'll tear up Woodland Park Zoo, July 27, for just $19 a pop. Tickets go on sale May 5.

Happy Birthday To Me
Posted April 23 at 6:31 pm by Hannah Levin
My Bloody Valentine is playing All Tomorrow's Parties in Monticello, New York on my friggin' birthday. That would be more than enough by itself, but Shellac, Polvo, Mogwai and Wooden Shjips are performing as well. Oh yeah: and the Meat Puppets doing Meat Puppets II and Thurston Moore doing Psychic Hearts. I think my head may seriously explode. Even the goddamned venue looks killer, so I really hope I manage to snag tickets when they go on sale Friday morning.
