Twelfth Annual Seattle Waterfront Chowder Cook-Off

If you consider yourself a chowder aficionado, make your vote count in this taste-test, part of the Seattle Maritime Festival. For a mere five clams, you’ll sample three-ounce soups from nine restaurants competing for the People’s Choice Award, including Anthony's Pier 66, Elliott's Oyster House, The Crab Pot, The Fisherman's Restaurant & Bar, Ivar's, Steamer's Seafood Cafe at Pier 56, TASTE at the Olympic Sculpture Park, and Todd English's Fish Club. If you’ve got family in town, this might be a great way to nosh along the waterfront. Net proceeds benefit Seattle maritime community organizations. At Market

This week marks the opening of several more farmers markets around --and out of-- town: In Kirkland (at Park Lane East, between 3rd and Main Streets) the market opens on Wednesday, May 7 (2-7 p.m. If you live closer to Burien, you’ll be happy to know that their market opens on Thursday, May 8, from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m., at S.W. 152nd and 10th S.W. streets. The Broadway Market opens Sunday, May 11, and runs 11 a.m. to 3 p.m., located at 10th Avenue East and East Thomas Street, on Capitol Hill. Lake Forest Park is getting into the act as well: their market begins its season Sunday, May 11, operating 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. at the Lake Forest Park Town Center, at the corner of Ballinger Way SR104 and Bothell Way State Route 522. You’ll have plenty of shopping locales to choose from this week, on your continued search for the season’s first asparagus, rhubarb, and (more reliably) to refill to your supply of braising greens. Market Report

The farmers markets just keep a-coming this season, and no doubt one will soon open near you. On Wednesday, May 14, the Wallingford Wednesday Farmers Market celebrates its first day; it's located in the Wallingford Center parking lot (N.E. 45th St. and Wallingford Ave. N., 3-7 p.m.). The Madison/Capitol Hill market begins its season on Saturday, May 16, in the parking lot of the Grocery Outlet (MLK Way and Union St., 3-7 p.m.). Stop in the store to check for rare appearances of gourmet butter, while outside, the stalls will offer early starts for your garden: radicchio, beets, cipollini onions, and heirloom tomatoes.
