Best Renaissance Rocker: Shana Cleveland

Surf-rock quartet La Luz is not the only project of frontwoman Shana Cleveland—the singer/songwriter fronts “quietime crooners” Shana Cleveland and the Sandcastles and led the now-defunct K Records group The Curious Mystery. She’s also contributed short stories and poems to outlets like Vice and artwork to highly regarded literary/art mag The Believer. Her voice sounds like Cat Power and Jesse Sykes. Her fingers can pick a delicate guitar tune like “Holy Rollers” as easily as they can crank out a show poster for Hollow Earth Radio. Yet her most dexterous skill might be grace under fire. Most recently: During a monthlong tour of the States with La Luz, a post on music blog Brooklyn Vegan containing the band’s photo incited a string of sexist comments. Her response? “Our tour’s been incredible. And we don’t care about jerks.”
