The Daily Drink: The Kentucky Cartel at Barrio

“The Daily Drink” brings you a must-try libation from our booze columnist Zach Geballe.

Over the last couple of years, I’ve become a fan of drinks with more than one base spirit. For example, the Vieux Carré, which blends brandy and rye whiskey and is freaking delicious. That said, I haven’t found many that involve tequila, so when I saw the Kentucky Cartel on the drink list at Barrio I knew I’d have to try it: a combination of Johnny Drum bourbon, Canela tequila, honey, old-fashioned bitters, and a rinse of Laphroaig for just a slight smoky finish. It was tasty, though the combination of the bourbon and honey left it just slightly sweeter than I’d have wanted. Still, that distinctive tequila bite was present, and with other flavors surrounding it, it took on an interesting role as an accent to the drink, not the focal point.

Zach Geballe does a lot of drinking. When he’s not working at The Dahlia Lounge or for his business Vine Trainings, he’s studying for the Court of Master Sommeliers Exam. His weekly column here at Seattle Weekly, The Bar Code, endeavors to inspire, educate and sometimes poke fun at all things beer, wine and spirits related.
