The Daily Drink: Two Vintners Syrah

“The Daily Drink” brings you a must-try libation from our booze columnist Zach Geballe.

Well-made Washington Syrah is one of those wines that makes me appreciate the growth of the wine industry outside of Europe. Washington Syrahs like the 2011 Two Vintners Syrah I drank the other night have such an exuberance of fruit and the kind of vitality that’s a bit harder to find in French Syrah (for example), yet when made in an Old World style they still retain the acidity and minerality that keeps them from being overbearing fruit bombs like so many Australian Shirazes. Widely available in Seattle-area wine shops, it checks in at about $20, so it might not be an every-night wine, but it’s perfect for a nicer meal, especially roasted meats.

Zach Geballe does a lot of drinking. When he’s not working at The Dahlia Lounge or for his business Vine Trainings, he’s studying for the Court of Master Sommeliers Exam. His weekly column here at Seattle Weekly, The Bar Code, endeavors to inspire, educate and sometimes poke fun at all things beer, wine and spirits related.
