The Daily Drink: Basel Syrah

Today's must-try libation from our booze columnist Zach Geballe.

Washington Syrah can be truly spectacular, when handled well. It can also be a massive fruit bomb with little definition, if handled improperly. The 2007 version from Basel Cellars walked kind of a fine line: tons of rich blackberry fruit, but with just enough earthiness and acidity to keep it from getting out of hand. It made for a nice “last bottle,” after dinner was over but none of us wanted to stop drinking wine. The bold flavors and balance really shone in that setting, and at 14.5% alcohol it’s not quite the monster that some Washington Syrahs can be.
