Ethiopian Fare Featured on Whidbey; Happy Hour Begins at Rione XIII

Ethiopian culture and cuisine is on display later this month in Langley on Whidbey Island. An Ethiopian coffee ceremony and discussion about food anthropology and the influence of the country’s green coffee crop is scheduled for Wednesday, April 25. That’s followed on Saturday, April 27, with a cooking class and traditional Ethiopian-style dinner. The evening will feature ethnic dance, music and dishes, including Azifa (lentil salad) and Doro Wat (spicy chicken stew) with plenty of Injera for sopping it all up. All events are held at the NWLA Cultural Center on 5023 Langley Road. Click here for tickets and more info. In other news, Rione XIII just launched happy hour. The Ethan Stowell eatery at 401 15th Ave. E. is offering $5 glasses of vino and $6 craft cocktails. Chef Brandon Kirksey has concocted a menu to match, with bites like fried artichokes and beet salad with walnut and arugula pesto. Happy hour runs Sunday through Thursday from 5 p.m. to 6 p.m. and 10 p.m. to 11 p.m.
