Nina Simone: Love Sorceress: Indeed!

Sorceress is right: This document of a 1976 Paris concert, screened as part of the Earshot Jazz Festival, shows Simone casting some kind of furious spell over her audience. She did nothing if not express how she was feeling at any given second, and that hypnotic, incantatory frankness is in full regal mode here. Among many other choice moments of corrosive honesty, Simone takes the opportunity to inform the French the only conditions under which she will deign to remain in their country (“I insist on being not one of your clowns, but one of you”). The music, meanwhile, has a dizzying, breathtaking expansiveness. Look no further for proof of Simone’s genius than the passage in which she both knocks and enriches that hoary old standard, “Feelings.” Little Theatre. 7 and 9 p.m. Thurs. Nov. 6-Fri. Nov. 7.
