  • The Green Room

    The Green Room

1426 First Ave. Seattle, WA 98101
    206-628-3151

http://www.showboxonline.com Think of the Green Room as the Showbox's little sister. Skinny, shiny, and fairly new to the scene, the Green Room hosts its own events, presents its own identity, and serves an entirely different purpose than the Showbox's main stage. Scaled down acoustic sets, karaoke nights, art and photography openings, semi-private parties, and eclectic performances spot the Green Room's social calendar. Even on nights when nothing's planned, it's still a good place to find an empty stool and reflect on beers gone by (the etched-glass ledger of past Showbox guests that serves as a wall between the two spaces works as an exceptional memory-jogger and conversation piece). Although you'll probably do well to stay away from the bar menu- booze is king, while food seems to be something of an afterthought- the club boasts some decent happy hour prices. It tends to get overcrowded on concert nights and there can be an incessant draft due to patrons walking in and out the door for cigarette breaks. More >>

  • Hard Rock Cafe

    Hard Rock Cafe

116 Pike St. Seattle, WA 98101
    206-204-2233

http://www.hardrock.com Your cheeseburger may be $15, but you get to examine Krist Novoselic's bass from an appropriate distance while you eat it. Sure, the Hard Rock is a glossy tourist trap adjacent to the city's favorite attraction, Pike Place. But as with the Market, observant locals know where to find the hidden gems, which in the Hard Rock's case is its rooftop deck with a view that rocks. More >>

  • Highway 99 Blues Club

    Highway 99 Blues Club

1414 Alaskan Way Seattle, WA 98101
    206-382-2171

http://www.highwayninetynine.com They're serious enough about the blues, but at Highway 99 Blues Club, they like a good old-fashioned party, too. Depending on the night, you'll run into zydeco, rockabilly, folk, funk, traditional blues, or rock-edged blues at this borderline enormous brick-walled basement nightclub. A bank of pool tables and a big fireplace surround the stage, and a wall of smart black-and-white photographs captures the images of the nation's blues-hued past. The gorgeous 34-foot bar, made of recycled parts and offering specialty cocktails like the Muddy Waters Mudslide and The Blind Lemon Jefferson Drop, is about as nice to belly up to as anything in town. • The Moore

    The Moore

1932 Second Ave. Seattle, WA 98101
    877-784-4849

http://www.stgpresents.org The Moore is one of Seattle's historic monuments. It looks and feels like an opera house, but the place actually hosts as many pop musicians as theatrical performances. Though it's become a little run-down over the years -- look closely and you might detect some chipping plaster and faded paint -- the Moore regularly hosts some of the best touring acts and plays to grace Seattle, and it's a much more hospitable venue to see relatively famous performers than arena spaces like KeyArena or WaMu Theater. The only downside? They cram the chairs in so tight, it's impossible to dance. More >>

  • Musicquarium Lounge

    Musicquarium Lounge

216 Union St. Seattle, WA 98101
    206-838-4333

http://www.thetripledoor.net Located in the same building as the Triple Door, the Musicquarium Lounge is just the sort of upscale establishment you'd expect. With a menu featuring primarily Thai cuisine and a rotating events schedule that features everything from world music nights to trivia, the Musicquarium Lounge isn't just a place to kill time before a show at the Triple Door. People seem to come here as a destination in and of itself, and why wouldn't they? The food is good, the drinks are stiff (but so well-crafted, you can't tell until you get through one) and there's never a cover charge. The place has even got an aquarium (in homage to the "quarium" suffix) containing, among other aquatic creatures, a black polka-dotted ray. More >>

  • Noc Noc

    Noc Noc

1516 Second Ave. Seattle, WA 98101
    206-223-1333

http://www.clubnocnoc.com Noc Noc is a hidden gem in a downtown block of Second Avenue. Past the dull, green awning is a lavish, brick, Gothic-inspired interior with high ceilings and a large stone demon overlooking the bar. Noc Noc not only features standard bar offerings and a happy hour, but late-night, after-hours weekend events and a rotating cast of DJs. Whether you want to sit down in a large, comfortable booth to grab a drink with friends or dance into the wee hours on the expansive floor in the back, Noc Noc has you covered for an inexpensive night out downtown. • Owl N

Owl N' Thistle Irish Pub & Restaurant

808 Post Alley Seattle, WA 98104
    206-621-7777

http://www.owlnthistle.com A classic Irish-American hole-in-the-wall replete with Guinness posters, shamrocks, a tiny stage for live music, and, lucky for you, a happy hour every day from 3 to 6 p.m. with $2.50 micros and $2.50 well drinks (although drinking anything other than Jameson-neat-feels a little disingenuous here). In yet another room off to the side, you can break from the music and throw darts, play pool, or relax with friends. Don't ignore the happy hour food menu either: The O&T's fish and chips are stellar, and at under $3, even moreso. Just be sure to sit still: The seats in the booths have been known to fall off and send people tumbling to the ground before they've even got a buzz on. More >>

  • The Paramount

    The Paramount

911 Pine St. Seattle, WA 98101
    877-784-4849

http://www.stgpresents.org The Paramount Theatre is a Seattle institution: just one step down from, say, WaMu Theater in size, some of the world's most well-respected musicians and performers grace its stage on a regular basis. Its grandiose interior is reminiscent of a bygone era, but with a brand new sign and an ever-impressive show schedule, the Paramount will continue to be a Seattle institution for a long time to come. • Showbox at the Market

    Showbox at the Market

1426 First Ave. Seattle, WA 98101
    206-628-3151

http://www.showboxonline.com Never has a mirror ball looked so lonely as the one that's smack in the middle of the Showbox's enormous ceiling. The gargantuan ex-comedy club near the Market is certainly one of Seattle's best venues for live music, even if they seldom throw the spotlight on their singular indicator of occasional disco fever (18-plus dance nights and the random superstar DJ are booked as well). Flanked by two curved, red-lit balcony bars, the venue floor during shows is usually packed; good luck getting to the bathroom if you're not willing to wiggle around the perimeter. During all-ages shows, be warned: Drinkers are corralled into the balconies like off-limits lushes. For some shows, having that direct sight line to the stage is quite nice; for others, like, say, Gossip or Balkan Beat Box, you'll want to get down and dirty on the dance floor with all the other undulating bodies.
