With everyone and their mom becoming a social media wizard these days, there are questions (and stereotypes) regarding demographics of social media users.

Is Twitter just for celebrity-obsessed youngsters trying to keep up with the Kardashians? Is Pinterest just for middle-aged suburban women? Does anyone even use Tumblr?

With 67 percent of all Internet users utilizing a social networking site, a new study by the Pew Research Center's Internet & American Life Project set out to find out exactly who these people are. The study examined demographics of Internet users on social networking sites such as Facebook, Pinterest, Instagram and Tumblr.

Unsurprisingly, the study found that although most people under 50 are likely to use social networking sites, the most likely demographic to do so are 18-to-29-year-old Internet users, a population that reports an 83-percent usage. And among social media platforms, Facebook is clearly the most popular, with 86 percent of Internet users in this demographic spending hours on the website sharing pictures, "liking" statuses, and stalking ex-lovers.

Women were also a dominant demographic on social network sites, according to the study. Among Internet users, 71 percent of women used a social networking site in comparison to 62 percent usage among men.

Although the study found more women using Facebook, Instagram, Tumblr and Pinterest than men, male Internet users were more prominent on Twitter, with 17 percent usage in comparison to 15 percent usage among women.

Twitter was also far more popular among 18-to-29 year olds, with 27 percent usage according to the study. The age group of 30-to-49-year-old Internet users trailed behind with 16 percent usage of Twitter.

So yes, youngsters are the most prevalent demographic on Twitter. And yes, in the report's largest difference in gender, women are about five times as likely to spend their day pinning fashion photos, science and nature videos and all things crafts and cats on Pinterest.

And Tumblr? Only a measly 6 percent of Internet users have a Tumblr, but it's naturally dominated by the young, with 13 percent usage by those aged 18 to 29 years old.
