It was an interesting morning for one South Seattle family. According to Seattle police, a 27-year-old convicted felon showed up at his parents' house around 4:30 a.m. armed with a handgun and axe - demanding money. When that didn't work, the man allegedly moved on to his grandparents' house ... before eventually being booked into King County Jail for investigation of attempted robbery and unlawful imprisonment.

According to police, officers were dispatched to a home in the 104 block of 57th Ave South early this morning after receiving a call from the suspect's mother stating he was at the front door demanding money from his dad, and that he'd struck the door several times with an axe he was carrying. While officers were on their way to the residence they received an update stating the suspect and his father had left in his father's vehicle, and that the axe-wielding, money-demanding son was also carrying a handgun.

As Detective Renee Witt details on the SPD Blotter blog, here's how the situation played out:

Officers came across the dad, at 56th South and Bangor. He told officers that the suspect (his son) demanded money from him, displayed a weapon and told him to drive to Safeway on Rainer Ave to get $400 in cash. No money was exchanged and the victim dropped the suspect off on South Bangor Street where he got out of the vehicle and walked to his grandparent's house in the 107 block of 56th Ave South, allegedly still armed with a gun.

Containment was established at that location. Officers maintained visuals on the house and an on-duty negotiator responded to the scene. After a period of time, the negotiator was able to convince the suspect to come outside and he was taken into custody without incident. The suspect's grandparents denied knowing that the suspect was armed and declined to allow the officers to search their home for a weapon. There were no reported injuries.

According to police, the suspect is a convicted felon with "a lengthy criminal history." Authorities say SPD SWAT has made contact with the man at his grandparents' home on a prior occasion.

As mentioned above, the suspect was booked into King County Jail for investigation of attempted robbery and unlawful imprisonment.
