Phoenix Jones Uses Fliers and Threats Against Northgate Sexual Assault Suspect

Phoenix Jones says police better find the suspected Northgate attacker before he does.
On Tuesday the Seattle Police Department released a composite sketch of the man suspected of sexually assaulting a woman at knifepoint Friday evening near Northgate. According to police, there have been four reported sexual assaults "at locations near the I-5 corridor" since Friday, though police have not conclusively linked the man depicted in the sketch to all of them. While the police sketch is only based off the description provided by the Northgate victim, police do say that three of the victims describe their attacker similarly: a white male, 20 to 30 years old, between 5'7 and 6'0, 140 to 160 pounds, with short brown hair.

Since the sketch (posted below) was released, Seattle's premiere real-life superhero - the one and only Phoenix Jones - has been on the case. According to his extensive and predominantly all-caps social media postings, over the last few days Jones' Rain City Superhero Movement has been busy distributing fliers around town featuring the police sketch. In classic form, Jones has also taken to Facebook to make insinuating threats.

As Jones posted to his Facebook page Tuesday:

"I HATE THESE KIND OF SICK PIECES OF SHIT. I GOT FLIERS AND MY TAZER IM ON PATROL (I HOPE THE COPS FIND HIM FIRST IF NOT THIS VIDEO WILL NOT END UP ON YOUTUBE)"

Predictably, Seattle Police aren't exactly endorsing Jones' plan of attack. SPD recommends that everyone - even real-life superheroes - avoid confronting the suspect (or anyone they believe to be the suspect).

"Our message is going to be the same as it has been all along. Don't put yourself in danger. Call 911 if you see something. Be a good witness," says Det. Mark Jamieson when asked about the agency' stance on vigilante justice and statements like Jones'.

"It's going to be the same whether it's a superhero or a mere mortal."

Jamieson also notes that he's heard that a group of local real-life superheros has been distributing flyers that make it seem as though the police sketch represents the suspect in all four sexual assaults. As mentioned, the police sketch released to the public was made using only information from the Northgate assault on Friday, and has not been positively linked to the other three incidents - a point Jamieson says he wants to make clear.

Here's at least two examples of the flyers Jones' has been distributing:

The flyer reads: "This is a sketch of a suspect that has been attacking women in the North Seattle area over the last several days. ..."

And here's a different variation of Jones' flyer that makes the situation clearer:

RCSM Flyer Northgate Attacker 2.jpg

The flyer reads: "N Seattle: 4 attacks/sexual assaults on women occurring 2/8 - 2/11/13, including an attempted abduction (abduction suspect may be unrelated). The women were grabbed from behind. ..."

As you'll notice, the second flyer does identify the police rendering as the "Northgate Suspect Sketch."

Reached for comment, Jones (aka Ben Fodor) replied via Facebook with an attachment featuring the second flyer and an all-caps message that read:

"SINCE YOU OBVIOUSLY HAVEN'T READ OUR POSTER, HERE IS A COPY FOR YOU DETAILING THAT THE SKETCH IS OF THE NORTHGATE SUSPECT ONLY. THE OTHER DESCRIPTIONS ARE LISTED IN THE MAP BELOW. ALL INFORMATION SUPPLIED IS TAKEN DIRECTLY FROM THE SPD."

When asked specifically about the first flyer featured in this post - which says "This is a sketch of a suspect that has been attacking women in the North Seattle area over the last several days." - Jones stopped responding.

Just for good measure, police say they're actively continuing to work the case, but have no new information to release at this point.

Here's the sketch of the suspect in the Northgate attack:
