Aurora Alternative Medicine, a new medical-marijuana access point in north Seattle, opened in mid-December. They definitely know how to do a grand opening; when I visited during the last week of 2012, every strain of cannabis flowers was on sale for just $8 a gram, $25 an eighth (regular donations are $10 a gram and $35 an eighth). Needless to say, I left the place with my wallet much lighter, and my stash considerably heavier. I chalked up the unheated, minimalist reception area to the fact that Aurora Alternative had only been open for 10 days when I visited; my wait before going back to the bud room was mercifully short, so the chilliness of the austere waiting room didn't turn out to be a major factor.

Once in the bud room, I was pretty much a kid in a candy store with the $8 grams and $25 eighths. Budtender Corey was a knowledgeable young man who knew a little something about every one of the more than 20 strains available. It's always good to encounter dispensary employees who are respectful enough to be knowledgeable about their products.

With Corey's assistance and suggestions, I selected a sativa dominant strain, Moby Dick; a hybrid, White Fire OG; and an indica, Cherry Kush. For my free gram (available to new patients with a donation), I got Green Crack, an energetic sativa with a horrible name but a good cannabinoid profile.

Moby Dick (Haze x White Widow) is a subtly sweet, dank, piney smoke with a quick, very psychoactive onset. It will make you very high, very hungry, and very thirsty; have liquids and munchies ready if you're going to get down with the Dick. Word to the wise: this is a great strain for music listening.

White Fire ("WiFi") OG is garnering an increasingly impressive reputation in the cannabis community, both because of its sterling Fire OG Kush x The White genetic heritage and its powerful two-hour high combining indica pain relief with sativa consciousness expansion. The OG part of its genetics are clearly visible in the flower structure, with fat hefty trichome-encrusted buds with delicately spicy, gingery terpenes.

Cherry Kush's medium-green, tight nugs offer a bona fide relaxed indica body buzz with real pain relief and a subtle essence of cherry. Since Cherry Kush doesn't produce the couchlock of extreme stupefaction found with some indicas, it can be suitable for daytime as well as nighttime pain control, and is also great for nausea, appetite, depression and anxiety.

Green Crack, despite its absolutely atrocious name (who on Earth would want to name a healthful, beneficent herb after one of the worst hard drugs out there?), offers an excellent sativa high, full of energy. If you smoke much of this stuff you may find yourself in the middle of an unplanned house-cleaning project; have a joint of Green Crack with your morning coffee and a lifted, productive, euphoric day.

For concentrates fans, Aurora Alternative offers Wax Wednesday specials: two grams of butane hash oil (BHO) go for a $50 donation, or two grams of ear wax for $55.
