VIDEO: What We Learn from Watching Rob McKenna Dance 'Gangnam Style'

McKenna Gangnam.jpg
The video of Washington gubernatorial candidate Rob McKenna busting out the remarkably famous "Gangnam Style" dance at a Washington State Korean Association event started making the rounds late yesterday. I first saw it via Jordan Schrader of The News Tribune, though it was likely elsewhere by that point. Before long, everyone was talking about it.

But what can the video teach us?

Most importantly, despite his nerdy appearance, Rob McKenna seems to have some noticeable groove in his soul. When I heard the video existed, I expected a clip of McKenna rigidly faking along in a tightly crafted attempt to woo voters while palpably doing everything within his power to avoid looking dumb. But that's definitely not what this video is.

At times, McKenna does look dumb. And he doesn't seem to care - which is halfway awesome, considering the choreographed performance politics has become.

Sure, McKenna doesn't exactly nail it, but he busts out "Gangnam Style" with enough conviction to own it. Although critics might nitpick his moves, the Republican shows he's got a sense of humor and isn't afraid of occasionally making a good natured ass out of himself - characteristics that voters should appreciate far more than McKenna trying to ditch Essex Porter or snap at Democrat operatives asking questions about abortion coverage.

Here's video of McKenna getting his Gangnam on:

As the Seattle Times Jim Brunner pointed out yesterday afternoon, the Gangnam ball is now in Jay Inslee's court.
