Today marked the start of the school year for kids all over Washington. But as goskagit.com reports, a 16-year-old boy from Mount Vernon is spending the day in juvenile detention, accused of posting a Facebook update threatening a Columbine-style attack at Mount Vernon High School.
According to goskagit.com, the boy was arrested Saturday for investigation of felony harassment and taken to Skagit County Juvenile Detention, after police were able to trace the threatening post to him. Mount Vernon Police Lt. Chris Cammock tells goskagit.com that the boy has a history of run-ins with police and is known to have anger issues.
Alarmed by the posting, it seems a number of children alerted their parents after encountering the threats.
As goskagit.com reports:
Commenters replied to the threats, saying they were not funny, but the alleged author said he wasn't kidding and that drugs were affecting his brain.
Students who saw the comments were afraid of what the boy might do, Cammock said.
The website notes that the boy accused of making the threatening Facebook post is not enrolled in any Mount Vernon School.
Authorities are applauding the kids who came forward and reported the situation, saying the decision to alert their parents may have prevented something awful from transpiring.
