Negotiating is a skill - crafted over time and through experience. There's a process of give and take involved. But nowhere in the official guide to negotiations does it condone taking a hammer to someone who refuses to give you sex for crack cocaine.
According to the Seattle Police Department, however, that's exactly what happened last Friday in the 9400 block of Rainier Avenue South.
As SPD Detective Jeff Kappel detailed on the SPD Blotter blog over the weekend, at approximately 9:47 p.m. Friday officers and fire department medics responded to a 911 call of an aggravated assault in that area and encountered a female victim who'd been bludgeoned with a hammer. The woman was treated at the scene for her injuries, and later transported to a local hospital for further care.
As the Blotter blog notes:
Preliminary information indicates that the victim was picked up by the male suspect at Rainier Avenue South and South Chicago Street. She got into the suspect's car and they began negotiating a price for sex. When the victim wouldn't take "crack" cocaine as payment the suspect became enraged. He struck her on the side of the face with a hammer at which point she lost consciousness. When she awoke she was being pulled from the vehicle by the suspect. The suspect got her out of the car and fled the scene.
Let this be a lesson for all the hagglers out there.
