Like plenty of cities around the country, Auburn has a lot of bank-owned houses sitting around. And plenty of them are in a state of disrepair. But unlike most cities, Auburn is taking a proactive and somewhat unusual approach to the situation: the city has created a website under the name "Wall of Shame" where photos of these bank-owned homes are featured, all in an attempt to pressure the national banks that own them into stepping up their efforts to maintain the properties.

As KING 5 noted this morning:

The banks KING 5 reached out to stated they knew ownership of the property had been transferred and they maintain the properties. However, Auburn Mayor Peter Lewis says it's taking too long for the work to get done.

Lewis actually bikes around the city, taking pictures of properties to post to the Wall of Shame.

The Wall of Shame website, which currently features 19 properties, states:

The City of Auburn takes the issue of abandoned properties very seriously. City code compliance staff work every day to address the impacts of these properties on other properties and neighborhoods, however, in many instances, the mortgage holders are out of state financial institutions who are slow to respond or have hired property preservation companies who are not consistent in their maintenance activities.

Citizens who have concerns about abandoned properties and want to help the City get action on them can access information below about the mortgage holders. Citizens are encouraged to write, phone or email the mortgage holders or property preservation contacts and request action be taken on one or more abandoned properties. These efforts may help convince the mortgage holders and property preservation companies to act more quickly and consistently.

Here's a look at ten of the most shameful properties featured on Auburn's Wall of Shame.

This gem, owned by Wells Fargo, could probably be yours for next to nothing. That's a small price to pay for a blue roof (or is that a tarp?).

Owned by Deutsche Bank, this little beauty would make a lovely vacation home for those looking to get away from the hustle and bustle of Seattle in the pristine Auburn Valley. You could also probably cook meth in it.

Owned by Fredie Mac, and located on Scenic Drive, this piece of '70s ranch-style awesomeness offers privacy, an awesome shade of brown, and - if you look carefully - a pretty sweet red toolbox.

One Question, Seterus Inc: Does it come with the sweet car?

The Wall of Shame website indicates Bank of America owns this property. Not sure who owns the mattress.

In fairness to Chase Bank, which owns this beauty, mowing the lawn fucking sucks.

Wells Fargo owns this one. In truth, I probably would stop paying my mortgage too if my house was this color.

As Saxon Mortgage Services surely knows, nothing says "I care about this house," like plywood over the windows.

Apparently, Reverse Mortgage Solutions owns this property. Er .. garage thing. Or whatever.

Hmmm. Seems Chase Bank likes to mow the lawn just about as much as I do.
