When longtime U.S. Rep Norm Dicks announced in early March that he was calling it a day in D.C. at the end of his current term, speculation immediately shifted to who would replace Dicks in representing the 6th District, which stretches from Tacoma to Kitsap, Mason, Grays Harbor, Jefferson and Clallam Counties, and includes the Olympic Peninsula and most of Washington's coast.

Traditionally a safe haven for Democrats, thanks to Dicks, Gig Harbor state senator Derek Kilmer is the only Democrat seeking the job. And today Kilmer released his first TV commercial.

Part of a packed primary field that includes six other political hopefuls, Kilmer's first TV spot focuses on his background, his family, and his upbringing in Port Angeles. Because of Kilmer's blue-collar background, the spot claims he "gets it," when it comes to creating jobs.

That, of course, will be for voters to decide.
