Prosecutors in Pierce County have filed charges against 31-year-old Travis Reed, alleging he attempted to help his maligned father by offering to bribe a witness with $200 a month. Travis Reed is the son of longtime Buckley City Councilman Randy Reed, who pleaded not guilty late last year to charges he sexually abused a 7-year-old girl.
Making matters stickier, charging documents filed in Pierce County court indicate Travis Reed was in a "dating relationship" with the witness he attempted to bribe during the time of his father's alleged child abuse. That witness is the mother of the 7-year-old girl at the heart of the charges facing Randy Reed.
According to charging documents, prosecutors say on Sept. 22, 2011 the victim's mother received a text message from Travis Reed, "informing her that he was willing to place $200.00 per month in an account for [her daughter] until the time of her eighteenth birthday, for a total of $12,000.00, in exchange for [the mother] dropping the charges against his father, Randy Reed."
It didn't work. Charging documents indicate the victim's mother told Travis Reed she "could not, nor would not" drop the charges against his father. She then contacted the Buckley Police Department who took custody of her phone and captured the bribe-related text messages allegedly sent by Travis Reed.
Police then obtained a search warrant to view the cell phone records of Travis Reed, which according to charging documents verified that text messages had been sent from him to the victim's mother at the times and date recorded on her phone.
Travis Reed is scheduled to be arraigned Wednesday.
KOMO reported yesterday that Pierce County Prosecutors will soon file additional child-sex charges against Randy Reed related to alleged indecent liberties with two teenage girls. Randy Reed remains a member of the Buckley City Council, but if he's convicted of a felony state law will force him to resign.
