Armed with information collected during an eight-day spate of "buy & slide" drug stings in early April, not to mention a kickass name, SPD's "Operation Blade Runner" was in full effect June 1-2 in downtown's Pike/Pine corridor, resulting in the arrest of at least 29 suspected drug dealers in Seattle.

Attempting to combat blatant street-level drug dealing downtown, long a concern of the community (especially in the vicinity of Pike and Pine), according to the Seattle Police Department's Detective Jeff Kappel from April 11-19 a joint force comprised of SPD officers and officers from the King County Sheriff's made undercover drug buys from suspected drug dealers -- collecting information to be used during later arrests.

Those arrests came last Friday and Saturday, when Kappel reports police arrested 29 of 42 targeted suspects, and also arrested nine additional suspects whom officers came into contact with during the course of their sweep.

Here's the gist, taken from SPD's official release on Operation Blade Runner:

From April 11th to April 19th, 2012, SPD and KCSO officers and detectives conducted "buy & slide" drug stings, where an undercover officer buys drugs from a street dealer and "slides" away, building a case on the dealer who is subsequently arrested on a later date. The drug dealers targeted in this round up were all subjects of on-going narcotics investigations based on the April "buy & slide" operations and were arrested based on probable cause built up during those operations.

In the course of the two day round up SPD and KCSO officers arrested 29 of 42 targeted suspects. Seventeen of the arrested suspects are Seattle Police-only narcotics cases, six are KCSO-only cases, and six are joint SPD-KCSO cases.

There were nine additional suspects arrested who officers came into contact with during the course of their activities for a total of 38 suspects arrested during the operation.

Kappel tells Seattle Weekly that all 29 of the targeted suspects were booked into King County jail, and how long they were held would have been a decision of the court. Many were likely released Monday after spending the weekend in King County jail.

Kappel reports on the SPD Blotter blog that the remaining 13 suspects are still being sought by police and when located will be arrested.
