Microsoft has set the bar pretty low for their commercials, probably peaking with getting the double rainbow guy to shill their photo-editing software. They would rather have Apple drive a hammer through their proverbial face than admit there's room for improvement in Microsoft products. Which is why it's so surprising to see the old Redmond ego-machine making an ad acknowledging their decades-old browser is a piece of crap:
Until this month, Microsoft appeared oblivious to the fact that their once top-dog browser Internet Explorer had been relegated to the software pile of shame for over a decade. Now they're poking fun at themselves hoping to get people to switch back to their (admittedly much improved) Internet Explorer 9:
Microsoft is joining the ranks of other self-deprecating companies like Domino's Pizza, which pulled this same mea-culpa ad campaign in 2010, garnering mixed results. Customers said the new pizza still tasted like cardboard, just now with a helping of garlic to numb the pain. Meanwhile, comedian Stephen Colbert asked, "Is that pizza or did an angel just give birth in my mouth?"
'Softies can take comfort in the fact that Colbert did credit Domino's at the time for their honesty, declaring, "It takes alpha meat balls to stand up and say 'America, we suck.'" So the question is: Will Microsoft keep up their new 'reality-based' campaign, or are they just having a good laugh?
