A Serial Car Thief is Targeting Distracted Parents at Spokane Day Cares

You're getting out of your vehicle for less than a minute, so you think "what's the point in turning the car off?" and leave it running only to return to find it stolen. "How could this happen?" you ask. "How could they have known?"

In Spokane a car thief has found child care centers to be a particular weakness for drivers leaving their cars unattended. You may have seen this headline and wondered "What's wrong with those people, leaving their cars unattended?" Raising kids is tough, and seeing them safely to out-of-your-hair first thing in the morning on a regular basis can sometimes take priority over more rational thinking.

Yesterday the day care dummy drove off with his fourth car in three months. He ditched the car a few blocks away in an alley, but not before stealing a purse that was on the front seat. Descriptions of the thief have been consistent in each case: Thin white guy in dark pants and a grey hoodie, about 5'11" in his late 20's to early 30's.

In just one week last month Spokane had seven smash-and-grabs in front of day care centers. Those parents were smart enough to lock their vehicles but it still wasn't enough:
