In response to our cover story "How They Met", an anonymous mother sent us a letter calling our cover picture of homosexual couples "ridiculous and offensive." She's not a fan of public displays of affection (P.D.A.) on newspaper racks and doesn't want to tell her kids that gay people exist (but don't call her homophobic!). Her letter is our Comment of the Day:
The cover of your Feb 22-28 issue is ridiculous and offensive. As a mother of three children - 11, 9 and 4 -I have enough explaining to do about the heterosexual innuendo on the magazine covers at the checkout lines. Parents don't need to start explaining the nature of homosexual relationships to young children. Really???
Several family restaurants near our home who carry your publication and had not even noticed the front page, were equally offended and chose to throw out all of their copies once I had pointed it out to them. They don't want the controversy or any hint of impropriety at their establishment which caters to familis and children.
I am not homophobic - I just don't care to view couples of any sexual orientation making out when I take my children to dinner. The homosexual content is just another layer that I would rather not have to address before dinner.
If alienating readers works for you, then so be it. If you care to increase your readership, have some class, exercise discretion and respect all of your audience - intended or not.
