The Seattle Sounders are hosting a free final preseason soccer match tonight in their continuing tradition of hosting an annual Community Shield match.
The Sounders modeled this annual friendly on England's annual Football Association (FA) Community Shield matches, which pit the winners of the FA Cup and the English Premier League champions. The English version has been going 100 years now, while the Sounders version is only in its third year.
Jaguares finished 5th in the Mexican Premier League's Aperatura Championship, losing by one goal to 4th-place Santos Laguna. Santos is the team Seattle will face next week on March 7 at home in the first leg of the CONCACAF Champions League quarter-finals.
If the Sounders win their next six games in the Champions League, they would bring home the title of "best team on the continent." A Champions League victory would also give the Sounders a first-round berth in the FIFA Club World Cup. That's right--"Sounders" and "World Cup" in the same sentence. Why not?
Though the match is free, it is a charity match, and fans will have the opportunity to "pay it forward" for local charities. Weather is going to be nasty tonight, so pack your poncho. Gates open at 6 p.m., kickoff is at 7.
Here's some Midnight City to pump up Sounders fans for the new season:
