Nancy Pearl, Seattle's celebrity librarian, book guru and author of best-seller Book Lust: Recommended Reading for Every Mood, Moment and Reason, has signed a deal with Amazon.com to create a series of "Book Lust Rediscoveries," which will publish six out-of-print or out-of-stock books per year.
The titles will be sold as print editions and audiobooks on Amazon.com and distributed to bookstores, wholesalers and libraries.
Pearl told 94.9 KUOW, an NPR station, "I just have to say that this is really a dream come true, that I had wanted to do this and talked to Sasquatch about it 2003, right after the first Book Lust book came out. And to have it happen is just, I mean, it's just amazing."
The first title will be out this spring, though independent bookstores say they may not be able to sell them because Amazon will sell so many more online.
Says Vladimir Verano of Third Place Press: "I kind of feel disappointed that Nancy's choice will have a sense of betrayal with a lot of librarians and independent booksellers across the country, not just Seattle."
Pearl, who founded the much imitated "If All Seattle Read the Same Book Project," is famous for her approach to readingr. Her Rule of 50 states: "If you still don't like a book after slogging through 50 pages, set it aside. If you're 50 years old, subtract your age from 100 and only grant it that many pages."
