Rep. Rick Larsen Fires Staffers Who Tweeted About Their 'Idiot Boss,' Drinking On the Job

Three of Representative Rick Larsen's youngest staffers wanted to make their December one to remember. (Or "D2R", in their chosen shorthand.) And guess what? They succeeded! Because yesterday they all got fired.

What did in these budding politicos? Why Twitter, of course, the social media Duralog responsible for half the world's public self-immolations. (Facebook is responsible for the other half, so in this metaphor let's just consider it a sweat sock soaked in lighter fluid.)

The three members of Larsen's legislative staff -- Seth Burroughs (@therocketship1); Elizabeth Robbee (@betsysbites); and Ben Byers (@byers_remorse) -- have all since erased their Twitter accounts. But thanks to the PrintScreen efforts of NW Daily Marker, we can all see that these guys were fired for a very, very good reason.

The misguided Tweeting apparently began all the way back in July, when Burroughs openly admitted to surfing YouTube at work. (Dear Seth: We all do this. The trick is not to broadcast it.)


Things only got worse from there.

In the intervening months, the trio must have realized that all their Mr. Smith Goes to Washington daydreams weren't going to be realized, especially with the other party running the House. Solution: Shots!


And from Morning Drinking-ville it's only a short stroll to Insulting Your Boss-burg.


But that's not the best part. For that, we'll have to fast forward to the statement from Larsen's office announcing the firings.

"Congressman Larsen and his staff became aware of the issue concerning the three staff members at noon EST. We became aware of the issue through a tweet referencing an article about the incident. Congressman Larsen immediately decided to fire the three staff members involved in the incident. The staff members were dismissed at 1:10 p.m. EST."
That's right, lest you think Larsen isn't in touch with both the lives of his constituents and the staffers who he sees every morning, know this: It only took him an hour to decide the fate of the employees who had been openly mocking him for five months. Leadership!
