UPDATE: Nearly two weeks after being beaten into a coma by what he described as a trio of black teenagers, South Seattle hair stylist Danny Vega has died. His loved ones, meanwhile, say they're more interested in justice than in peace.

UPDATE CONTINUED: Vega, as the AP reports, died on Sunday, surrounded by friends and family and hooked up to life-support systems. KING 5 reports that family members, more than anything else, want Vega's killers to be caught.

The family members also believe that Vega was targeted because he was openly gay. But Seattle police are thus far unconvinced, as they are not investigating the murder as a hate crime.

Hate crime or not, whatever group of cowardly scumbags who prey in packs of three on 60-year-old men are still on the loose.

Danny Vega, a 58-year-old openly-gay Filipino hairdresser who has been running a shop in South Seattle for some 30 years, is in a coma. But before he lost consciousness he was able to tell his family a few details about the trio of teens who jumped him.

KING 5 has the story from an assault that happened a couple hundred yards from my apartment where I'm writing this post right now.

"He was telling me he walks every night to keep in shape because he's almost 60 years old you know," said Rios.

It was during one of those walks Tuesday night that three teenagers came up to Vega from behind.

"He said that they just kept beating me and I was unconscious for 30 to 45 minutes," said Vega's niece, Melanie.

Vega was able to tell his family what happened before falling into a coma. He's now on life support.

"We are very much hoping for a miracle," said Vega's sister Valentine.

While Vega has never cut my hair (I don't think he's in my price range) every time I've walked by his shop/house near the corner of MLK and Othello, it's been bustling.

On Vega's Yelp page, customers have posted several comments related to the beating.

Robin A. writes:

Danny Vega is well known in the Filipino Community. And by that I mean POPULAR! everybody knows him. He is a kind man who didn't deserve to get beat up. Beat up to the point where he is near death. He is a man that was proud of who he is. He is the most proudest godfather I know. He'd tell everyone that I (as well as my COUSINS) was his god-daughter. And he'd say it with a smile and was/is always proud of it.

To the IDIOT that beat him for no reason deserves to be put in JAIL for LIFE!

Vega's family believes he was beat because of his open homosexuality. Regardless, police are not investigating the assault as a hate crime.
