Nigger Creek, Washington--The Racially-Insensitive Fishing Spot Rick Perry Missed Out On

rick perry gun01.jpg
All that hunting Rick Perry was doing at Niggerhead Rock, Texas he could have been fishing in Nigger Creek, Washington.

Nigger Creek, renamed Negro Creek in the 60s, is a gorgeous stream about 10 miles south of Leavenworth in Chelan County where, as Hook and Bullet notes "fishermen will find a variety of fish including smallmouth bass, yellow perch and carp."

Perry, as we know, is on the defensive about a favorite hunting spot called Niggerhead Rock.

But as The Daily Show's Wyatt Cenac points out, the Lone Star State is hardly alone when it comes nigger-prefixed locales.

Cenac mentions a different slur-led noun altogether: Niggerhead Mining District, Washington, which seems to only be mentioned in an old trade magazine article from 1988. It would appear that Lucky Break Gold Co. bought the land with high hopes.

Indeed there are hundreds of N-worded places around the country, with "Niggerhead" being the runaway favorite and Nigger Lake a strong contender.

And as it happens Nigger Creek (when it was still was Nigger Creek) had its own reputation for gold. Find some here:

From the mouth of Nigger Creek, upstream about 2 miles, is the location of the Nigger Creek Placer Mine. Boy I am suprised [sic] somebody hasn't changed the name of that creek. In section 9, T22N R17E, is the location of the Amigo Mine, which produced lode gold.

Today the marginally-less-racist Negro Creek is mainly known for fish.

At any rate, Perry missed out on the fishing hole when it was at its most racist--which, as everyone knows, makes for the tastiest carp.

But visiting now might be the perfect gradual transition from his hunting days at Niggerhead Rock. After all, he can always climb Chink's Peak in Idaho if he's not impressed in Washington.
