Isaiah Kalebu Verdict: "Guilty" on All Counts

Isaiah_Kalebu01.jpg
After a three-and-a-half week trial followed by a day and a half of deliberations, a King County jury today delivered a verdict in the rape, torture, and murder trial of Isaiah Kalebu.

"Guilty" on all counts.

The charges are first-degree aggravated murder, first-degree murder, attempted murder, rape, and burglary.

The crime took place in July 2009. Teresa Butz and her partner awoke in their South Park home to find Kalebu, who had snuck in through an open window, standing over their bed, naked, with a kitchen knife. Kalebu then proceeded to rape the two women over and over, cutting them with the knife while he did, until Butz's partner managed to escape and Butz herself died.

Since the trial began, Kalebu's lawyers have unsuccessfully tried to have their client deemed incompetent to stand trial, by reason of insanity.

Kalebu has made violent outbursts in court and been banned from the courtroom; he's swallowed a pencil during a hearing; he's tried to strangle himself with a towel during another hearing, and demanded to testify wrapped in an American flag.

But for all the side antics and legal theatrics, the case has always been about simple cold-blooded, premeditated rape and murder.
