Melissa C. McMillen told investigators that she'd delivered her newborn baby girl, dead, into the toilet at her north Tacoma home, then she'd left the body there and taken a long shower. But police, and now a medical examiner, say that the tiny baby was very much alive when she was born and that something far worse had happened to her.
The Tacoma News Tribunereports that a medical examiner has listed drowning and hypothermia as the causes of the unnamed baby's death.
Police say that McMillen tried to hide her pregnancy, and when she'd finally given birth to the girl she drowned her, then put her body in a book bag.
McMillen told Tacoma police investigators that she gave birth the morning of June 4 while seated on the toilet in her home in the 5300 block of North 39th Street, court documents state. She reported that the baby was dead at birth.
McMillen reported that she left the girl in the toilet for 90 minutes as she took a shower, then put the baby's body in a book bag. Police and firefighters were called to the home late Tuesday and found the body.
