Life Imitates The Office: Woman Follows GPS, Drives Into Water in Dwight's Hometown; Video

Surely writers for The Office could not have known just how true their script could be for the 2007 episode in which Michael (Steve Carell)--despite the "This is the lake! This is the lake!" screams of Dwight (Rainn Wilson)--obediently follows the orders of his GPS and drives his rental car into water. Preposterous. Outrageous. Could only happen on a sitcom.

Except yesterday it happened here, in Dwight's old stomping grounds no less. Police say a car with three young women ended up taking a GPS-ordered turn and wound up submerged in a Bellevue slough. It was a high-tech splashdown almost identical to Michael's - in a rental car to boot.

The video--and KOMO-TV's report:

Three young women escaped a sinking car after a direction from a rental car GPS unit sent them down a boat launch and into the Mercer Slough early Wednesday.

The driver apparently thought she was on a road while following her GPS unit just after midnight, but she was actually heading down the Sweyolocken boat launch.

The road was dark and the driver crashed the car into the water in Mercer Slough Nature Park.

All three women made out safely, but the car is now completely under water.

From the "Dunder Mifflin Infinity" episode:

Dwight Schrute: This is the lake!

Michael Scott: The machine knows!

Dwight: This is the lake! This is the lake! There's no road here!

Michael: Stop yelling at me! Stop yelling at me! [drives into lake]

Dwight: Remain calm. I have trained for this. Okay, exit the window! Here we go.

Automated Car GPS: Make a U-turn if possible.
