James Edward Russell, Olympic Corrections Center Escapee, Arrested After Knocking on Door of Off-Duty Guard

After escaping from an offsite work camp, Olympic Corrections Center inmate James Edward Russell was looking for a safe place to make a phone call and possibly hide out for a while. And while he was wandering through the woods, he stumbled upon a cabin near the Hoh River Resort, so he knocked on the door.

That proved to be a very bad idea.

Because the gentleman who was renting the cabin happened to be an off-duty prison guard from the very prison Russell had just escaped from.

The Peninsula Daily News has the story.

James Edward Russell, 39, was arrested at 8 a.m. in the woods near the resort about five hours after he was chased and tackled by an off-duty OCC guard staying at one of its cabins.

Russell escaped from the minimal-security prison 25 miles south of Forks sometime before 10:30 p.m. Tuesday, when a head count came up with him missing, said Deputy Prisons Director Earl Wright.

How he escaped remains unclear and under investigation, Wright said.

The vacationing guard apparently noticed that the guy was an inmate because he still had his red OCC inmate shirt on (that'll do it).

Russell was serving time for theft and forgery (his fourth conviction), and was due out as early as March 2014.

That date is definitely getting pushed back now.
