When two churches in Bend, Ore. were vandalized last week, someone spray painted "Praise the FSM" on the buildings, in apparent homage to the Flying Spaghetti Monster group of "Pastafarian" atheists.
This upset the actual FSM members, who are much more into clever-letter writing and peaceful debates than vandalism. So one of the members decided to do something about it.
Hemant Mehta, through his blog "The Friendly Atheist" decided to ask his readers to help raise money for the damaged church.
Graffitti on Bend, Ore. churches that said "Praise FSM" wasn't appreciated by real FSM "Pastafarians."
At last count the group had raised $2,649.40 for the Christian Life Center and Westside Church in Bend.
It turns out (at least in the Christian Life Center's case) that the donation won't be needed as the church was able to use existing cleanup funds to take care of the mess, but the gesture didn't go unnoticed by Pastor John Bluebaugh.
He, along with Mehta, went on Fox & Friends to talk about the atheist/Christian "partnership," with Bluebaugh saying: "I think its amazing. To have a gentleman like Hemant step in and have concern for us was pretty amazing. It just thrilled our hearts."
Mehta, whose effort caused great concern among a few of his fellow atheists but was mostly supported by them, pointed out that "it's possible to be good without God."
In related news, Bend Police appear to have caught the vandals, a trio of 18-year-olds who claim that "even the police officers said that, like, our graffiti was their favorite."
