In the brief melee that erupted on Saturday during a Pride Weekend celebration in Capitol Hill, a transgender person named Maurice Schwenkler was arrested for pedestrian interference after several windows were broken in stores and on police cars.
In anarchist circles, however, Maurice Schwenkler is not known as Maurice Schwenkler, but as "Ariel Attack."
Jseattle at Capitol Hill Seattle confirmed the identity of Schwenkler, aka Attack, by comparing Seattle and Denver court records.
It turns out that this person (it's unclear if Schwenkler identifies as male or female) has been in trouble before for breaking stuff. Schwenkler pleaded guilty in 2009 to second-degree misdemeanor charges of criminal mischief for smashing windows at Democratic Party headquarters in Denver in 2009.
(S)He received one year of probation and was ordered to pay $5,000 in restitution for the Aug. 25 incident at the party headquarters at West Eighth Avenue and Santa Fe Drive, according to the Denver district attorney's office.
Schwenkler and an accomplice, who was never identified, took a hammer to 11 plate-glass windows. Police caught them in the act, and Schwenkler was arrested.
Anarchist websites across the country raised money for Schwenkler's $5,000 bail, and identified him as "a transgendered anarchist" using the name Ariel Attack.
It's unclear exactly what Schwenkler did during the melee on Saturday. Reports of the event range from describing it as a peaceful march that was co-opted by black-clad vandals who started breaking things, to allegations that it was largely organized by the black-clad thing-breakers.
King County Prosecutors have said that it could be weeks before Schwenkler is charged with an actual crime and more details are released.
