Peabody Energy Isn't Actually Giving Away Free Justin Bieber-Themed Inhalers to Children

Coalcares.org sounds like exactly the kind of website that the PR gurus at Peabody Energy would create to help improve the image of coal-based energy production. But it's not. Coalcares.org is actually a spoof site meant to point out the health hazards of burning coal. Not that giving away free Justin Bieber-themed inhalers to kids who live anywhere near a coal plant isn't a good idea. It's just not Peabody's idea.

Here are some gems from the site.

Coal Cares™ is a brand-new initiative from Peabody Energy, the world's largest private-sector coal company, to reach out to American youngsters with asthma and to help them keep their heads high in the face of those who would treat them with less than full dignity. For kids who have no choice but to use an inhaler, Coal Cares™ lets them inhale with pride.

Puff-Puff™ inhalers are available free to any family living within 200 miles of a coal plant, and each inhaler comes with a $10 coupon towards the cost of the asthma medication itself.

Of course if one visits the site's "Kidz Koal Korner" they can find games aplenty.

Peabody isn't amused.

The company put out this statement today after it came across the satirical site.

Earlier today, an activist group released a "spoof" website claiming to be sponsored by Peabody Energy. The site is in fact a hoax, making inaccurate claims about Peabody and coal.

Peabody is proud to help hundreds of millions of people live longer and better through coal-fueled electricity. A growing collection of studies demonstrate the correlation between electricity fueled by low-cost coal and improvement in health, longevity and quality of life.

So there you go, haters. The electricity that coal produces, and that could very soon be coming to Washington via the Gateway Pacific Terminal near Ferndale, is actually beneficial to people's health, because, well, it's energy.

Never mind how that energy is produced.
