Seattle Weekly ace reporter Keegan Hamilton broke news this week when he wrote about the real story behind UW basketball player Venoy Overton's dismissed rape charges. It turns out the the original narrative, first pushed by KIRO 7 News, that Overton had taken a 16-year-old girl back to his sister's place and had sex with her despite her telling him "repeatedly to stop and that she just wanted to meet an athlete she admired" was light years off the mark, according to the full 227-page police report obtained exclusively by Seattle Weekly.
Hamilton's story exhaustively recounts what went into that report and needless to say, you should read it.
But if that's too much to ask, one reader summed up the contents in nine easy sentences.
Let me sum up her night:
She lies to her parents and leaves her bellevue home scantily clad.
She consumes alcohol.
She leaves with strangers from the westlake food court.
She leaves with strangers from the mcdonalds restaurant downtown.
She consumes more alcohol.
She lies about her age.
She performs oral sex on strangers.
She leaves the apartment in tears.
It's the word "performs" that sticks out most in the above post, as "perform" (quite willingly) is certainly what Overton's accuser did, according to the police report.
Obviously, Overton's judgement with even putting himself in a situation in which he's drinking with two young-looking girls and then letting them perform oral sex on him calls into question his character (mostly because he's a UW basketball player).
But from everything that's in the police report, it definitely doesn't make him a rapist.
