Starbucks Is Now the Third-Largest Restaurant Chain in the United States

That's not the third-largest coffee chain or third-largest coffee retailer, mind you. Starbucks is now the third-largest restaurant chain in the country.

The ranking comes today as part of industry analyst Technomic's list of the largest 500 restaurant chains. McDonald's and Subway top the list.

Technomic's president Ron Paul (not the sort-of-crazy Libertarian from Texas) went as far as to call Starbucks a status symbol.

"Starbucks keeps gaining and gaining," says Ron Paul, president of Technomic. "Carrying a Starbucks cup in your hand says something about you as a person."

Not sure if that also applies to rats (also big Starbucks fans).

So with that in mind, here is a partial list of restaurant chains that Starbucks is now larger than: Wendy's, Burger King, Taco Bell, Jack in the Box, Olive Garden, Red Lobster, Blimpie, Carl's Jr., Chick-fil-A, Chipotle, Papa John's Pizza, Peet's Coffee, White Castle, Quizno's, Hardees, El Pollo Loco, Dunkin' Donuts, Jollibee, Dairy Queen, Jamba Juice, KFC, Domino's Pizza, Panda Express, Popeye's Chicken & Biscuits, Sonic Drive-In, Taco del Mar, Taco Time, Arby's, Wienerschnitzel, Church's Chicken, Krispy Kreme, A&W Restaurants, Green Burrito, Del Taco, Panda Express, Red Robin, Togo's, Zaxby's, Baskin-Robbins, Cousins Subs, Dick's Drive-In, Einstein Bros. Bagels, Fatburger, In-N-Out Burger, Papa Murphy's, Port of Subs, Sbarro, Taco Tico, and Tastee-Freez.
